EVOLUTION OF STUDENT SERVICES IN CANADA Over the years, the student services field in Canadian higher education has evolved into a cadre of administrative service professionals who bring a breadth of understanding and scope of institutional responsibility to shaping the post-secondary student experience. In the beginning, however, practitioners tended to respond to student needs only as they arose. Early Years The earliest history of student services as a recognized function in Canadian higher education spans roughly seventy years, from the final two decades of the nineteenth century to about the middle of the twentieth century.

In chapter 2, the rudiments of such a knowledge base are described in response to two core questions essential to the aims of student success: How do students learn, develop, and grow? and How can the post-secondary experience enhance that process? Drawing from a wide range of socio-behavioural disciplines, the constructs explained therein constitute the core of “student development theory” that frames the work of student services in the post-secondary setting.
