She follows him. ” she asks behind him, climbing on the wagon to put the map away. ” “I’m going on to my sea,” he says. “I’m tired of waiting here. It’s time for me to go, and I’m leaving in the morning. ” He looks up. qxp 11/28/07 4:32 PM Page 29 A N I N S TA N T IN THE WIND “And suppose he returns tomorrow? ” With a shrug he takes a gun from the driver’s seat, together with some powder and lead. ” she challenges him.

The one she gave me, the one not known to anybody but her and me. Adam to the world—but Aob to us while her hands are soothing my body in the dark, Aob when she tells me about her people roaming free in the wilderness over the mountains, following their cattle and their fat-tailed sheep as the seasons come and go, stopping at the many stone graves of the great Hunter Heitsi-Eibib scattered across the land.

She has brought the small hand-mirror with her, but these past three days she’s been too tired to use it at night, too busy in the morning preparing for the new day’s trek. A plodding pace, but exhausting enough. Her body aches. Sometimes she can feel her stomach contracting in small cramps, perspiration breaking out on her face. She has maintained her nightly ablutions, of course, even if it meant that Adam had to lug the bucket of water for a mile or more—with that arrogant sneer on his face which frightens and infuriates her, and makes her powerless.
